Migraine Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar and brown paper; time honored migraine treatments from centuries ago.

Who doesn’t remember the old Mother Goose Melody about Jack and Jill.

    Mother Goose’s Melody (1781)
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
    And Jill came tumbling after
Then up Jack got and home did trot
As fast as he could caper.
He went to bed and plastered his head
    With vinegar and brown paper.

Note the date on this quotation; 1781.

Here is proof positive that vinegar has been used in migraine treatments for almost 300 years; wouldn’t you say?

Well Ok,; so I am reading a bit into this but the truth is apple cider vinegar has been used with great success in migraine relief for many many years and is well worth trying if you are suffering from a migraine headache or any type of headache for that matter.

I have been told that there are over a hundred different types of headaches and using vinegar in your headache home remedies will probably not work well on all of them but it’s worth a try.

Let’s look at some of the more common headaches first then I’ll talk to you about how apple cider vinegar may help ease your pain.

Migraine Headaches

Migraines usually occur on the side of the head and may be associated with the arteries of your brain.

What happens is the blood vessels become inflamed or swollen which creates a pressure on the walls resulting in the pain you feel.

You may become sensitive to light, noises and smells and physical activity will make the condition worse. Stressors can be

  • menstrual period
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • caffeine
  • fatigue
  • MSG
  • chocolate
  • aspartame
  • hormonal changes
  • oral contraceptives
  • nitrates and
  • some drugs

It would be wise to keep track of the things you consume or affect you immediately before an episode. See if you can identify your stressors.

Because of the relationship with your blood, it makes sense that any migraine treatments you try should be directed at your circulatory system.

Check out my page on Apple Cider Vinegar and I think you will see for yourself how migraine treatments using vinegar can help.

Tension Headaches

These are my favorites (?) as they affect me most often. Usually caused by fatigue, stress or a physical problem such as might occur in your shoulders or neck. My tension headache radiates from my neck until it reaches my forehead. The pain can be excruciating and not even lying down seems to help.

I have some personal experience with this kind of headache so if you are affected by tension headaches I have some special words of advice for you at the bottom of this page. Stay tuned!

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are considered one of the most severe and intense types of headaches. They are most likely to affect men and can be very short in duration or last for a few hours.

There is no known cause for these excruciating headaches but they are thought to be brought on by abnormalities in your blood vessels and nerves. If this is the case it is understandable that migraine treatments using ACV should help.

Possible stressors are

  • stress
  • hay fever
  • bright lights
  • sexual activity

Sinus Headaches

A sinus headache is located in your forehead and cheek bones and is obviously the result of inflammation of your sinus due to infection. It will probably be accompanied by a fever. Again, migraine treatments using ACV should help.

Rebound Headaches

Here is one type of headache with a lesson to be learned.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a rebound headache is “caused by frequent use of headache medication”. Another argument for using natural home remedies whenever possible.

The frequency and duration of the headache depends on the type of overused drug you took. If you used opiates you may get the headache after 8 days usage in a month while for barbiturates the duration is only five days usage in a month.

The good news is that you can reduce or stop this kind of headache by dropping the drug that caused it.

Try apple cider vinegar instead. You may be surprised to learn that your results often will be quicker than using prescription drugs.

The Vinegar Solution

There are a couple of apple cider vinegar headache home remedies you can use. Try them both and see which one works best for you.

The first method is for continual protection against headaches and numerous other health issues. This one is a daily routine which I strongly suggest you commit yourself to doing in the morning, in the evening and, if you feel it necessary, at mid day.

You may be surprised at some of the other unrelated benefits you will get from doing this.

Method 1: Mix 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar with honey (to taste) in an 8 ounce glass of water; I like to use hot water. Drink this solution down two or three times a day.

Method 2: Bring equal amounts of water and organic apple cider vinegar (at least as much as the water) to a boil. Remove from the heat, place a towel over your head and inhale the vapors that rise from the bowl for about 10 minutes. This method should ease your headache considerably in a very short time.

My experience with Tension Headaches

As I told you I am susceptible to tension headaches and over the years (prior to my interest in vinegar home remedies) have discovered a few ways of dealing with this condition very effectively.

I used to think that the only way to get rid of my headache was to take some aspirin and go to sleep for an hour.

This method never failed me - until one day …

Round Lake Saskatchewan My kids and I took our boat out into the middle of the lake on a quiet afternoon and cut the engine. Like we often did over the summer we would jump into the water and swim around the boat for awhile.

On this particular day I had the bright idea that I would swim under the boat and surprise my three children by coming up from below them. This worked so well and they got such a charge out of it that they asked me to do it again; then again.

I don’t know how many times I did this but I do remember that it was early in the season and the water was still a little cold. The end result was I got the “mother” of all headaches.

This one was big! This one was not going to let go!

When we got back to the cabin I decided to try my standard treatment of taking a couple aspirin and lying down for a snooze. Not a chance!

My head was hurting so bad I couldn’t even lay it down on my pillow let alone go to sleep.

After about a half hour of excruciating pain, my kids came to tell me there was a thunderstorm coming across the lake.

Thunderstorms were our absolute favorite event of the summer and there was no way I was going to miss this no matter how much pain I was in.

We went out onto our veranda and watched the storm cross the lake in front of us. I sat in my armchair, the kids wrapped a blanket around me and we settled down to watch the spectacle.

Within minutes the pain dropped away and was totally gone. I could not believe it but I felt like I had never even had a headache.

I chalk this one up to one or more of the following:

  • the storm completely relaxed me
  • the ozone (activated oxygen) that always accompanies a thunderstorm
  • the electrical charge that is in the air at the time
  • all three of the above
What ever it was, the relief was almost instant and the feeling was incredible so …

The next time you get a tension headache, find a thunderstorm and watch it. ;-)

Is this great advice or what?

What?

Ok try the vinegar. I am sure it will help. Trust me!

Have You Tried an Old Home Remedy that Worked for Headaches?

I have found that a home remedy (vinegar or otherwise) is often more effective and quicker acting than the traditional over the counter drug.

Has this been your experience?
