Cough Home Remedies

There are several different types of coughs so cough home remedies need to treat them according to their nature and intensity.

Many times a home remedy will work just as good as any over the counter drugs and for a lot less money.

Vinegar and honey make a great combination.

Basic Cough Remedy - Apple Cider and Honey

Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia

"A cough is a sudden and often repetitively occurring defense reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from excess secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes.

The cough reflex consists of three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the glottis, usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.

Coughing can happen voluntarily as well as involuntarily, though for the most part it is involuntarily.”

If you are satisfied that a doctor’s attention is not needed try this:

  • 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey
  • glass of hot water or lemon tea
  • drink before meals or when you get the irritation

I have found the above mixture to be very tasty and enjoy sipping it slowly.

This is more effective than gulping it down because there is more exposure to the irritation in your throat.

Chronic Cough Remedy

For those more persistent coughs it may be necessary for additional ingredients.

  • 1 tablespoon of vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • heat to blend the mixture
  • drink warm mixture

Natural Cough Remedies for the Brave

  • 1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 4 teaspoons of honey
  • take a tablespoon when cough starts and another at bedtime

Vinegar Cough Syrup Recipe

You can make your own cough syrup quite easily. Wash out an old cough syrup bottle or any bottle that has a good tight seal.

Add equal amounts of apple cider vinegar from a health food store and honey. The honey not only makes the concoction drinkable but it also adds its own health values.

I use Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Take one teaspoon every 4 hours or as needed.

Keep in mind that there are no drugs or medications of any kind in this recipe so taking too much is not a big concern. Be reasonable though as more is not always better.

When to Stop Cough Home Remedies

In most cases a cough can be dealt with easily using a natural remedy without resorting to drugs or chemicals.

You are visiting this site because you are interested in natural remedies and cures and prefer not to run to a doctor every time you experience a minor health issue.

Unfortunately if your cough persists past a week it may be wise to get a medical opinion.

A vinegar and honey treatment may help in the majority of cases but be aware that some coughs can be a symptom of respiratory tract infections which are best referred to your doctor.
