Burn Treatment

Vinegar is an excellent first aid burn treatment for common household burns that may occur from hot water, a hot stove etc.

Most minor burns will heal on their own, and a home treatment using vinegar is usually all that is needed to relieve your pain and promote healing.

Burn Treatment Disclaimer

Warning!

More serious burns and burns involving chemicals or electricity require immediate medical attention.

Burns covering large areas or which affect the face should also be referred to a doctor.

If you experience fever, chills or vomiting it is best to see your doctor.

For the purposes of this page and all references I make to burns and burn treatment, I am referring to minor skin burns affecting the top layers of skin only.

Deep burns or burns that create blistering and intense pain are not to be treated lightly so please don’t rely on vinegar or any other home remedies you may read about on the internet.

For these kinds of burns start with cool running water and then call your doctor. See Site Disclaimer

Having said that I would like to assure you that for minor burns, vinegar makes a very good burn treatment home remedy when diluted and applied directly on the burn area.

So, for minor burns only, take the following steps:

  • First run cool water over the area for a few minutes to bring the temperature down and prevent the burn from penetrating deeper into the tissue
  • Soak a cloth in diluted (1:1) vinegar and apply to the burn area.
  • Vinegar will relax the area and kill the pain
  • Refresh the compress and reapply if the pain intensifies
  • Repeat as often as needed

If you don’t have vinegar, some other good home remedies include honey, True Lavender Essential Oil, Aloe Vera and vitamin E oil.

For information on several essential oils that are both quick and very effective at treating burns, check out my other site, Essential Oil Remedies

Honey

Honey is probably something that would never occur to you as a remedy against a burn but it is quite effective. Honey is acidic so it prevents the growth of bacteria.

It also reacts with damaged tissue to create a natural form of the hydrogen peroxide that is sold in drugstores.

Lavender Oil

Just a Marketing Ploy

*No governmental agency or generally accepted organization "grades" or "certifies" essential oils as "therapeutic grade".

Rene-Maurice Gattefosse (1881-1950), who is considered the “Father of Aromatherapy” suffered serious burns to his hands in a laboratory explosion. Although his wounds became gangrenous, he found using essence of lavender to be a very effective burn treatment.

Although a so-called "therapeutic grade" oil may help, I recommend using only "clinical grade" oil.   Click on this link for an exceptional, clinical grade Lavender Oil that my family uses.

Aloe Vera

If you are using an aloe plant to treat your burn make sure that you use both the gel and the leaf. First cut the leaf and squeeze out some gel onto the burn then spread the leaf out and press it against the burn fastening it there with a bit of cloth or a band aid.

When Should You Obtain Medical Treatment?

Severe burns involving electricity or chemicals should be referred for proper medical attention as well as burns involving a large part of your body. If symptoms such as a fever or chill occurs it is also best to seek medical attention.

Burns to your face or burns that cause swelling or unpleasant odors should not be treated lightly and medical treatment may be necessary.

If there is a lot of pain involved it is probably best to obtain medical advice.
